My friend Igor and I were canoeing in Flamingo when I took this photo (December 2007). I thought it was a blue heron, but now I'm not too sure -- birds are not my specialty.
Flamingo is at the extreme southern tip of Florida's main land mass, although obviously not as far south as the Keys. The area sustained heavy damage during a hurricane two or three years back (Wilma?) and many of the lodging areas remained closed. From the Everglades park entrance, it's about 35-40 miles to this location ... so make sure you have enough gas. You can fill up in Flamingo, where there's a general store that acts as an oasis.
Why go to Flamingo? It's the only place in the US where you'll see crocodiles and alligators occupying the same habitat. And we saw exactly that -- we watched a croc pass an alligator (within 15 feet) right by the main dock.
