Day One: Roswell and Carlsbad

I flew into Albuquerque around 11:30 Friday night, the beginning of a 2,700 mile road trip which will carry me through the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. I took it easy on day one (Saturday, December 19) because I was sneezing like Paul Pfeiffer/Marilyn Manson. Saturday just involved a drive to the UFO capital of Roswell and a brief hike @ Carlsbad Caverns. I saw a number of bats near Carlsbad's natural entrance but no other wildlife. Today I'll be doing two cave tours -- Left Hand Tunnel (9 am) and King's Palace (2 pm).

The stretch of road between I-40 and Roswell (60/285) shows almost no signs of life. There's a little town called Encino which is probably 80% abandoned buildings. It reminded me a little of the drive between Joshua Tree and Mojave in California -- you can travel 90 miles without seeing a gas station.

Tomorrow (Monday, December 21) will be spent at White Sands. Here are some photos from the first day (mainly of cacti):
